August 2024 Round Up

The Robin Trust 1000 Mile Challenge for 2024 has been a remarkable initiative focused on both promoting physical activity and supporting the training of home-based carers in South Africa. The challenge, which offers participants the option to walk, run, or cycle distances up to 1,000 miles over a year, has been instrumental in raising funds to sponsor individuals like Siyamthanda Mfana. Siyamthanda, a 19-year-old from Guguletu Township, is one of the beneficiaries who will receive training to become a professional nurse, thanks to the funds raised through the challenge.

This year’s effort is part of the broader mission of Robin Trust, a non-profit organization established in 1993 by Leslie McLeod-Downes. The trust provides essential healthcare services, including home-based care and sub-acute rehabilitation, while also operating a college that trains carers. The challenge not only encourages a healthier lifestyle among participants but also makes a tangible impact on the community by supporting individuals from economically deprived backgrounds to gain valuable skills and employment.

For those interested in getting involved, whether by participating in the mileage challenge or by donating, the Robin Trust’s official website in South Africa, or through the Go Fund Me page to sign up in the UK.

Making a Difference

As part of the challenge we wanted to make a difference and support a life changing opportunity.  We are pleased to announce we are sponsoring Siyamthanda Mfana, who will attend the training at the Robin Trust.   Siyamthanda is 19 Years Old and lives in a 1 room shack (Zinc House) at the back of the family home  in GULGULETHU TOWNSHIP with her mother Michelle and her sister who is 4 years old.  Her mother works as a cleaner at the Stay Easy Hotel at the Waterfront in Cape Town, where she earns 3,500 rand per month which is about £148.05p.  To complete the course she would have to find 11,820.33 rand which is £500.00p for the course fees.  Siyamthanda wrote a letter looking for sponsorship, which will be a big step towards achieving her long term ambition to qualify as a professional nurse, however the financial challenge stands in the way and that is why we are raising funds to make dreams come true and see her next graduate with other home based carers, which will be a step towards moving out of poverty and giving back to her community.

Help us to raise funds by either joining the challenge or leaving a small donation by clicking here!

About Us

The Robin Trust was founded in 1993 by Leslie McLeod-Downes, who relocated to the UK and currently works for the NHS in Gloucestershire, and is a member of the Health&Hustle.  Her daughter, Robyn, required specialised nursing care and Leslie recognised the lack of qualified carers in the Cape Town area.  Leslie, following Robyn’s passing started to train carers to provide home-based care services via an agency and is passionate about succeeding in funding carers.

Team Health&Hustle are running a challenge and raising funds for the Robin Trust which is a non-profit organisation, delivering excellent nursing and home-based care.  The Trust is a team of dedicated professionals who provide skilled and compassionate health care to patients, that range from individuals requiring home based care to those in the need of medical rehabilitation at their sub-acute facility.  The Robin Trust also operates a Home based Care College providing sought-after training to students.

The fees for the full accredited programme is £500 per student. The programme is life changing for an individual, who is economically deprived and without an income. On completion they have recognised training and an entry into the job market as a carer. It further benefits the community as they provide skilled care to people in various settings such as their own home, care homes and hospitals.
